Jet Airways providing Wheel Chair Assistance from January 30, 2008.

Jet Airways will accept Power Driven Wheel Chairs, assistive devices or other mobility equipment as checked baggage from passengers with mobility disability who are dependant on the equipment with effect from January 30, 2008.

The wheel chair, assistive device or mobility equipment will be carried free of charge.

Power Driven Wheel Chairs and assistive devices will have a battery which could be a dry battery or a wet (spillable) battery.

The spillable batteries will not be carried on ATR aircraft.

In cases where the wheelchair requires disassembly for loading in the aircraft and then reassembly on arrival at destination, the passenger should provide written instructions concerning the disassembly and reassembly of their wheelchairs.

We request you to inform the respective airport a minimum of 48 hours prior notice for carriage of spillable wet cell battery operated wheelchairs, in order to procure the container and hazardous materials packaging.

Physically challenged and infirm passengers who require assistance during boarding, disembarking and evacuating the aircraft can make a special request while booking their flight. To avail of this facility the passenger has to inform our reservation staff at the time of reservations. Our Customer Service Staff at the airport will arrange for this assistance and an attendant with a wheelchair will assist them while boarding and alighting the flight.

Accessible tourist vans available in Mumbai

I was informed that a vehicle with wheelchair
accessibility was available. I went to meet the young
Prasad Phanasgaonkar who has designed the vehicle. He
has Muscular Dystrophy, is wheelchair-bound and has
traveled in India using this car. The model is a
Toyota Qualis which was remodeled as a high roof van
to accommodate any size of wheelchair. Prasad of
Mumbai runs a car rental agency called Samartha
Travels. Prasad was recently featured in LOKSATTA.

Contact Prasad at :
Mobile:+91-9821501718

The patient or senior citizen can be seated without
any discomfort. The charges were reasonable and
include cost of fuel and the driver.
Click on this link to watch a video of the car.

1. The back opens and a lift platform slides out.

2. The lift is lowered to ground level.

3. The wheelchair can be wheeled onto the lift.

4. The wheel chair is lifted up, slides into the back
and is secured.

Though we are familiar with such a facility, I knew
about its existence in Mumbai city only now. I used
this facility recently and will now use it often.
I am sure many ADAPT members, senior citizens, ailing
bed-ridden patients and their families can avail of
this.

New policy on Air Travel for Persons with Disabilities - 2008

Greetings from AccessAbility!

Following the recently released ‘Civil Aviation Requirements – Carriage by Air of Persons with Disabilities and/or Persons with Reduced Mobility’ by the office of Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), it is important that the rights conferred to disabled passengers or persons with reduced mobility are clearly understood and further disseminated in a simpler format.

We at AccessAbility have taken the initiative of compiling a synopsis of the CAR document, to inform and guide disabled passengers of their rights.

The synopsis “Air Travel – Know your Rights” is available at http://accessability.co.in/AirTravel-Know-Your-Rights.pdf as a free download and may be circulated further.

The complete CAR Document (Section 3, Air Transport Series-M, Part-1) as released by the DGCA on 2nd May 2008 is available for viewing at

Read this document on Scribd: Air Transport Series-M, Part-1 - D3M-M1

else http://dgca.nic.in/cars/D3M-M1.pdf.

We hope you find the synopsis useful and will be happy to provide any further information as may be required. I also request you to forward this information further

Car modifier for physically challenged

I think the “wizard” who made my dream of driving a car, come true, deserves an exclusive post. He is:

Mr. Bhaskaran

NO 25, NEW MARKET STREET,
CHOOLAIMEDU,
CHENNAI - 600094

Mobile: 9841190690

To mention a few words about him, he is an obviously talented Automobile Engineer cum car modifier, who specialises in modifying cars for physically challenged people. He has modified more than 150 cars so far, with 100% success and satisfaction, including the top- guns like Mercedes Benz, using the Alfred Bekker system. For under just Rs 19,000 (this might be variable depending upon the car), he had fabricated and fitted custom built hand operated kit for the accelerator and brake and combined both into a single lever, which operates both, mutually exclusively, using a push-pull mechanism, which makes it fool proof. The whole process takes just about 4-6 days. As a client, I could not be any more happier with him, both as a car modifier and as a person. His work is impeccable, his manners, immaculate. He is a boon for physically handicapped people, atleast through out Tamil Nadu. He is a rare breed indeed, because, although there are many car modifiers in Chennai, finding such a car modifier for physically challenged people in Chennai, is like finding a pearl in a haystack. (Ya he is a Pearl!). Try searching cars for physically challenged, in Google and you will see what I talking about. I dedicate this post to him.

A few snaps of the hand controlled system in my car :
